Blue Mountain Plastics, an Ice River Springs company, takes in plastic used in food and beverage containers and turns it into food grade plastic, which Ice River Springs uses to produce water bottles, that can then be recycled. This short video, narrated by Terry Bradshaw of Editions TV, summarizes the company’s approach to sustainable bottling and the environment.
Jamie Gott, President and CEO, describes their commitment, “In 2009 we went ahead and made a large investment in equipment and buildings to become the first beverage company in North America to produce recycled content in a closed loop”.
In addition to recycling plastic the company has been reducing its environmental impact by optimizing freight efficiencies, piping water from the source, using solar energy arrays and geothermal cooling and planting 70,000 trees to capture carbon dioxide. Compared to using new plastic we have reduced energy and emissions by 78% – see details here.
“IRS is family owned and family run,” says Sandy Gott, Executive VP, “Our goal is to be the leading environmental beverage company in North America and we are well on our way to offering our consumers a healthy and environmentally friendly option when they choose their bottled water.” For details on how recycling PET packaging saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions see the resources on the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) website.
Closed-loop recycling is described in this video. It shows why and how Ice River Springs makes green bottles.
